What
is Iyengar Yoga?
The
world’s most widely practised method of yoga is that which was taught
by BKS Iyengar of Pune, India. He developed a system
of yoga known for its emphasis on alignment and accuracy, through which
strength, stamina, balance and flexibility are promoted: a new sense of
well-being.
Iyengar yoga
is also known for adapting postures as necessary to suit a student’s
needs, hence reducing the risk of injury and making the yoga accessible
for everyone. It is taught using a carefully graded and systematic programme
of postures. Breath control (pranayama) is gradually introduced.
Iyengar yoga
is widely believed to have great therapeutic value. Numerous
scientific clinical studies have indicated an improvement through regular
practise of Iyengar yoga in providing relief from chronic health problems.
Specific sequences of postures have been developed to help lower back
pain, osteoarthritis, depression and anxiety, insomnia, menopause, and
reducing high blood pressure among others.
BKS
Iyengar
Considered to be one of the foremost and influential yoga teachers in
the world, BKS Iyengar had practised and taught yoga for more than 80
years. His teachings came to prominence in the West after meeting with
Yehudi Menuhin. Through Iyengar’s teachings, the violinist recovered
from muscular injury and referred to Iyengar as “my best violin
teacher”.
Iyengar Yoga
is now taught in over 40 countries worldwide with a network of 180 national
Iyengar Yoga Associations. He has written many definitive texts on yoga
practice and philosophy, and is best known for his books "Light on
Yoga", "Light on Pranayama" and "Light on Life".
In recognition
of his achievements, he was awarded the Padma Bhushan in 2002 and the
Padma Vibhusan in 2014, the highest civic honour for excellence, by the
Indian Government. In 2004, was named by Time magazine as one of the top
100 most influential people of the twentieth century.
Iyengar Certification
All certified Iyengar yoga teachers are experienced practitioners of yoga
who have undergone rigorous training and assessments of their own practise
and teaching. Certification is internationally recognised and a benchmark
of excellence.
