What
is Yoga?
Yoga
is a traditional Indian discipline, practiced for over two thousand years.
Of great value to us now as then, yoga benefits the whole person by developing
a healthier body and mind.
About 300BC,
the renowned sage Patanjali compiled the Yoga Sutras. In this book, he
outlined the ways through which a person could realize their full potential.
The steps include developing individual morality and behaviour, yogic
postures, breath control, and meditation.
The yoga
postures (known as asanas) increase the body’s efficiency and overall
health. The body is seen as the primary instrument that enables us to
work and evolve, so we treat it with great care and respect. Breathing
techniques are based on the concept that breath is the source of life
in the body. In class, we gently increase breath control to improve the
health and function of both body and mind.
The practise
of exercise and breath control then prepare the body and mind for meditation,
and we find a way to a quiet mind that allows silence and healing from
everyday stress.
Regular daily
practice produces a clear, bright mind and a strong, capable body.
